Equinox Sports Club Washington, D.C.: A Closer Look

Equinox Sports Club in Washington, D.C. is marketed as a premium fitness destination, but many members have expressed concerns regarding the facilities and overall experience.

Amenities and Accessibility

This club boasts a variety of amenities including a swimming pool, basketball court, sauna, and extensive workout equipment. The wheelchair-accessible entrance and car park are steps towards inclusivity, making it easier for all members to enjoy fitness. Additionally, there are wheelchair-accessible toilets and showers available for those who need them. However, despite these offerings, many reviews highlight serious issues with maintenance and cleanliness. The locker rooms and showers have been described as needing urgent attention, with reports of unclean conditions that include "hair-laden lockers" and filthy restrooms. This has raised concerns about the overall atmosphere of the gym, which should reflect its premium pricing.

Customer Service Dilemmas

Many individuals have noted that while some staff members, such as personal trainers, provide excellent service, the customer service from management leaves much to be desired. Reports of unresponsive staff, particularly concerning membership inquiries, cancellations, and facilities issues have been persistent. Members have felt ignored when raising legitimate concerns, leading to frustration among patrons paying upwards of $200 per month for memberships.

Facility Conditions

Despite its luxury branding, feedback indicates that the condition of the facility does not align with expectations. Broken equipment, particularly in the cardio and strength training areas, has been a frequent complaint. The layout is criticized for being inconvenient, with essential equipment distributed across multiple floors, resulting in awkward transitions between workout areas. Moreover, the clubhouse's sanitary conditions have been called into question. Complaints regarding standing water in showers, mold, and lack of basic hygiene products like hand sanitizer are prevalent. The cleanliness of the sauna and steam room has also been a subject of concern, with many expressing dissatisfaction regarding their maintenance.

Member Experience Highlights

While there are substantial critiques, members have praised certain aspects of Equinox Washington, D.C. The presence of highly skilled trainers has been a highlight for many. For instance, personal trainer Corey Belin has received accolades for his tailored training sessions, helping members achieve significant fitness goals. Some patrons appreciate the sense of community and friendly atmosphere fostered by certain staff members, making their experiences at the gym enjoyable despite the overarching issues. Furthermore, the variety of classes offered, from yoga to high-intensity training, provide members with options to stay engaged and motivated.

Conclusion: Is It Worth It?

While Equinox Sports Club Washington, D.C. offers some attractive amenities, the numerous grievances regarding cleanliness, maintenance, and customer service raise questions about its value. Potential members should carefully consider these factors before committing, especially given the high monthly fees. For those seeking a truly luxurious gym experience, it may be wise to explore other options in the area.

Terrible gym. Always something busted. The changing room is absolutely disgusting. Lockers are dirty and full of hairs.

Plus, no hand sanitizer anywhere in the gym. Just wipes for the gear that no one bothers with. Gear never gets cleaned.

Don't waste your cash, find a different gym instead.
Jordan Kim (6/4/25, 4:59 PM):
I must say, this club is fantastic and my trainer, Corey Belin, is absolutely brilliant. Ever since I started training with him, my body has undergone a remarkable transformation. I've received plenty of compliments, and I couldn't be happier with the results.
Allison White (6/4/25, 11:12 AM):
I've been a member since 2008! This gym is absolutely splendid. I began personal training with Corey Belin in November, and let me tell you, he's been absolutely fantastic. My mom even got inspired to start working out with him after witnessing the incredible results! I never imagined I could reach my previous level of fitness. He's tough! But incredibly rewarding. Would definitely recommend!
Mark Price (6/3/25, 10:00 PM):
The gym is quite lovely with a wide range of cardio machines, weights, a basketball court, and a pool. However, it doesn't quite meet the high standards one would expect given its price, especially when compared to neighboring Equinox clubs. The locker room gives off a rather dated vibe, reminiscent of a YMCA facility.
Janice Cruz (5/31/25, 2:36 AM):
I 'ad a rather unpleasant experience after payin' a visit to this gym. I strolled around the place and was assured by the staff that I'd receive an email to enroll. Later on, I got a blower sayin' that there was some bloke on the team who was not too pleased about me signin' up. I've never come across such a situation before in all my time at gyms. I'm at a loss for words. They won't spill the beans on what's goin' on.
Thomas Russell (5/29/25, 10:43 PM):
I absolutely adore Equinox, however, when juxtaposed with other sites, this particular one is in dire need of a makeover. It's evident that not much has been done in terms of upgrades since its acquisition. Being a destination club (meaning it's not part of the all-access membership), it's even more disheartening that the establishment is so outdated.

The space and location are fantastic, presenting ample potential for improvement.
Frank Green (5/23/25, 2:31 PM):
I've been thoroughly enjoying my time at this gym ever since I became a member in the Spring of 2022. The membership fees are quite steep, and the rates for personal training are high as well, but it has truly been a worthwhile investment for me post my knee surgery. I had the pleasure of working with Corey Belin, and he is absolutely fantastic. Starting off was a bit challenging for me as I was seeking a more vocal type of trainer due to the lingering pain, but Corey struck the perfect balance in pushing me at the right pace, showcasing his expertise and intelligence. He really knows his stuff and it definitely pays off! I feel amazing now and have significantly less knee discomfort. With each session, my confidence in him grew, enabling me to really challenge myself. If you're after tangible results, both physically and mentally, Corey is your man!! Plus, he's incredibly funny and shares some entertaining tales :)

At the Gym, old chaps seem to think it's right grand to bother the ladies without consequences. If someone tries to stand up for the gals, they're swiftly banned from the gym for life without so much as a jolly good explanation. It's a shame they're sheltering these scoundrels — mayhaps best to find another spot for your workout routine.
Lauren Richardson (5/21/25, 10:20 AM):
LUXURY IN NAME ONLY
Let me tell you, they really managed to get me ruffled up in just 36 hours, and that's why I felt compelled to write this review. In the men's Sauna, there are 2 heating units, but one of them conked out back in March and it's still not fixed. Because of this, it's nearly impossible to break a sweat in the mornings as the temperature struggles to reach even 150 degrees. You're shelling out over $200 for membership, yet they can't even mend a sauna in 8 months. To top it off, folks have stumbled upon human feces in the steam room and shower area. The locker room resembles more of a military outpost than a "luxury" sports club locker room. This is a typical maneuver by a private equity-owned company where they aim to extract maximum cash from you without investing in any upgrades.

I'm only giving this place 2 stars because of the trainers like Deion, Hector, and Rafa who radiate positive vibes and enthusiasm. Also, Timbo's classes are top-notch.
Chloe Hamilton (5/20/25, 6:50 AM):
I 'ave been a member for a year now and a regular in many of the fitness classes and love them all. Great teachers, offerings, and class schedule. I recently 'ad a personal training session with Corey Belin and Championship Rounds boxing workout. It was great and 'e was excellent. Would love for this to become a regularly offered fitness class! Cheers!
Ralph Young (5/20/25, 1:42 AM):
Jolly well nearly at the end of my yearly membership and shan't be renewing, all on account of the customer service, what! In my experience, a fair number of the chaps and chapesses on staff are quite the task to deal with, ever so snooty at times, and it's taken me multiple bellows and requests to get anything altered on my account.

Here are a few instances of the mishaps I've faced:
1) I telephoned twice over the summer to put a freeze on my membership for a spell whilst I was gallivanting. They assured me this would be a piece of cake and that they would sort it out...I rang for a third time about a month later only to discover that they hadn't frozen it at all and were still pinching pennies from me. When I mentioned the first two calls, they claimed no recollection of such events. Bit of a pickle for me in that case.
2) I was having a spot of bother with my personal training schedule and rang up to get in touch with the PT Manager. I rang several times over the span of a week and each time was told he was swamped. They pledged I'd receive a call back from him but alas, that call never arrived. (bit annoying he couldn't spare 15 minutes for a chinwag)
3) I had to cancel a PT session due to feeling poorly (a bout of strep throat), which they said meant I wouldn't incur a cancellation fee for the session. Yet they still charged me, and once again, it was like trying to find a needle in a haystack to get a hold of the PT manager.

On the whole, it's a cracking establishment but I find the staff to be rather lacking and somewhat impolite (particularly a lassie at the front desk by the name of Shaniya and one of the club managers named Duane). I adored my trainer, Evan (highly recommend), but ultimately, I reckon I could find what I need at another gym with a more pleasant staff.
Grace Barnes (5/16/25, 6:45 PM):
What a fantastic time I had at A.J.'s gym. Such a lovely club, spotless, welcoming, and I absolutely adore their Zumba instructor, Erick Ruiz (truly the greatest ever!♥️). I cannot recommend Equinox highly enough.
Mark Reyes (5/16/25, 6:27 AM):
Don't even think about joining this gym! At first, it may seem all impressive and thrilling, but after a while, you'll realize it's just not worth the steep price. Here's why:
1) The trainers tend to get in your way and treat you as if you're bothering them.
2) There's a serious shortage of equipment - often the trainers hog multiple items like med balls and barbells, leaving little for others.
3) Trainers might even swipe your gear in the middle of your workout if they feel like it.
4) The laundry service, if you have it, is unreliable - prepare to send countless emails to unhelpful staff if your laundry isn't done on time.
5) Every Equinox outside of DC has better gear, facilities, and more helpful staff.
6) While Marcus at the front desk is a gem, don't expect any answers from anyone else.
Check out other reviews if you need further convincing - they can't even tell good feedback from bad in their responses. Save yourself the trouble and money - steer clear of joining this place!
Ronald Hayes (5/15/25, 6:00 AM):
I’ve been a member at Equinox for about two years now. Most recently, I started personal training with Corey Belin. He’s brilliant at customizing the workouts to help you smash your fitness goals. His workouts are tough, efficient, and enjoyable! I highly recommend him!
Teresa Torres (5/14/25, 9:52 PM):
I must say, I have officially become a member of Equinox around two months back. And for those two months, I've been quite disappointed as I haven't had the chance to enjoy a good steam from either the steam room or the sauna. I make it a point to be there by 6 am EVERY weekday and 8:30 on weekends, yet every time I try to use the steam room after my workout, it's either not functioning or has just been cleaned. The sign near the steam room mentions that cleaning takes place between 2:45-3pm, so I'm perplexed as to why it's not operational first thing in the morning. I've mentioned this issue to the friendly ladies at the front desk, but I understand they may have limitations in what they can do. On a brighter note, the newest Equinox on Wisconsin has an excellent steam room. I suppose I'll have to consider switching to that location moving forward.
Andrew Anderson (5/14/25, 9:05 AM):
For the amount of money that Equinox charges, this specific location is quite a letdown for the entire brand. The men's locker room is very outdated, grimy, and in desperate need of attention. It really requires a significant makeover! The gym area is decent, but when it comes to the men's locker room, showers, and steam room, it's simply not up to par compared to other locations I've visited. Equinox is a premium fitness center, and all their locations should uphold that high standard!
Mia Gray (5/14/25, 1:47 AM):
The price is way too high for the quality you get. The equipment is always out of order, and it's always so crowded that you can never use the equipment you want. The locker rooms are reminiscent of a high school gym. There are much better options out there for your money.
Ava Long (5/13/25, 10:21 PM):
I attended a workout session with one of their trainers, Corey Belin, and it was absolutely brilliant. His Champion Rounds Boxing class was fantastic. I strongly recommend it and I'm looking forward to taking that class regularly.
Chloe Campbell (5/11/25, 5:52 AM):
The gym is decent, but there's definitely a need for some maintenance and renovations. Some of the showers are missing doors and have mismatched curtains instead. The padding on the floors doesn't line up with the walls in some areas, which looks a bit shabby. Several machines are out of order, and the bathrooms, particularly the showers and steam room, are quite outdated.
Samuel Green (5/7/25, 5:33 AM):
Jacob Williams (Jake) is an absolutely brilliant personal trainer and the reason why I continue to choose Equinox! I've been training with him for 3 years now, and at 60 years old, I am stronger and more toned than I was a decade ago. In comparison to other trainers I've encountered, he excels at customizing workouts to my specific needs at any given moment, whether I'm gearing up for a 7-day cycling adventure, looking to alleviate shoulder pain, or simply seeking motivation. Jake truly invests in his clients...and injects fun into our workouts!

Any gym can boast top-notch equipment, but personalized training of the caliber that Jake provides is truly a rare gem.
