Absolutely dreadful experience with the front desk lady and her colleague at the back. The moment I entered, the lady at the front desk shot me a disapproving glance and her attitude only worsened when she realized I didn't speak Spanish. After requesting for assistance, she initially claimed to be the sole staff member available, but then begrudgingly called for backup. Upon the arrival of the other lady, the front desk attendant persistently interrupted in an attempt to have her colleague deal with her first. Subsequently, the newcomer's demeanor towards me changed drastically, as she feigned misunderstanding my needs and instructed me to return to converse with another individual.

I had a dreadful experience. The manager, a young lady, didn't seem to care about listening at all; all she could say was no, no, no. It's as if I was asking for a free membership. I paid a monthly fee, so she should have been more considerate towards customers. After all, she is in a customer service role.

I have made the decision to leave the YMCA for multiple reasons. Allow me to highlight some of the most prominent ones. The alleged manager supposedly oversees this location and another one as well. She is not open to feedback from members, and attempting to provide input can result in a negative response. She often walks through the facility without acknowledging the members who keep it running. When she is not present, almost any employee seems to be in charge. The place is disorganized, with equipment scattered around. The manager has removed dumbbells and their racks, which means there are not enough for multiple members to use the same weight simultaneously. There are no staff members on the floor to assist new members with using the equipment. Showers are not available, and many amenities they fail to provide are blamed on the pandemic. There is a high turnover of employees, some of whom have mentioned that the manager frequently lies to members. The equipment requires calibration and maintenance.

The main reason why the YMCA in Allapatah has less than 300 members is due to mismanagement even before the pandemic. If this trend continues, they will struggle to stay open with such low membership numbers. With competition from IFBB Iramis Portero located half a block away and two Planet Fitness gyms within a 10-minute drive, offering lower prices, many members have opted to go elsewhere. The facility lacks personal trainers and has limited equipment. They open at 8 AM and close at 9 PM from Monday to Thursday, at 8 PM on Fridays, and remain closed on weekends. My impression is that management prioritizes their paycheck over the benefits for members. I would recommend anyone interested in working out at a gym to explore other options in the area and consider the benefits you'll receive for your money. The YMCA has lockers, but members are not allowed to use them, without clear reasons provided. Additionally, I never received explanations for this issue or others. Lastly, during one workout session, a subcontracted maintenance worker called me to the front desk as she was left alone and unsure of what to do, as the employees had gone to Pizza Hut 4 blocks away. Almost all members had fees deducted from their credit cards while the gym was closed, and obtaining refunds was reportedly challenging. Even Silver Sneakers members had premiums deducted during this time.

Well, let me tell you about my experience with this establishment in Allapattah. The YMCA, as a place that aims to create a more inclusive and supportive community, seems to be missing the mark. I recently tried to switch my gym membership from an individual plan to a family plan, and let me tell you, it cost me $25 just to do that, plus extra fees for adding family members. And if I wanted to switch back to the individual plan, you guessed it, another $25! And all this for a gym that is not even up to par, with old and rusty weights scattered around, limited weekend hours, and questionable cleanliness in the bathrooms. The fitness classes are lacking experienced instructors, and overall, it seems like they are not putting in much effort to make things better. It's a shame to see a place that was once great now heading in the wrong direction, especially in a community like this. My advice? Look elsewhere for your fitness needs.
