Discovering Planet Fitness in Hyattsville, Maryland

Planet Fitness in Hyattsville, located on East-West Highway, is a gym that many local residents gravitate towards for its affordability and range of services. However, reviews from members indicate that there are significant issues affecting its reputation.

Amenities Overview

While Planet Fitness promotes itself as a "Judgment Free Zone," it appears that the amenities, such as showers, toilets, and general cleanliness, are causing concern among members. The facility includes: - Toilets: Unfortunately, users have reported that the toilets are often unsanitary, with complaints about a lack of proper maintenance leading to unpleasant conditions. - Wheelchair-Accessible Toilets and Car Parks: There are dedicated spots available, but comments suggest that upkeep in general could use attention. - Showers: Members claim the showers are often dirty and lacking supplies, making post-workout refreshment less than ideal.

Wi-Fi Availability and Accessibility

A notable disappointment for members is the absence of Wi-Fi within the gym. This lack limits convenience for those who may want to stream workouts or listen to music while exercising. Furthermore, while the facility boasts wheelchair-accessible entrances and toilets, the overall accessibility experience may not reflect the expectations set by these features.

The Atmosphere and Clientele

The atmosphere at Planet Fitness can be described as mixed. On one hand, some members appreciate the community vibe and find it welcoming. However, others report a sense of frustration due to crowded conditions and a lack of equipment availability during peak hours. Equipment maintenance is a recurring issue; multiple machines are reported out of order, leading to longer wait times and disrupted workout routines.

Membership Requirements and Planning

A membership is required to access the gym, which comes with a relatively low cost. However, dissatisfaction with the service has led some former members to reconsider their choices. With reports of inconsistent management and billing practices, prospective members should carefully plan their signup process to avoid potential complications.

Conclusion: A Gym with Potential

Planet Fitness in Hyattsville holds potential but currently faces numerous challenges regarding maintenance, cleanliness, and customer service. If management addresses these concerns promptly, it could enhance the overall experience for all members and create the positive environment it aspires to be. For those seeking a gym with essential amenities and a community feel, it may be wise to visit first and assess whether it meets personal standards before committing to a membership.

Quite a few machines aren't functioning properly, and it's been like that for months now.
Kathryn Kim (5/9/25, 5:06 PM):
I particularly enjoy visiting this gym, especially now that I've discovered the best time to go when it's not too crowded. Sometimes it can be a bit daunting to find a spot to work out during peak hours. I do appreciate that there are two rows of weights, although having a third row would be even more helpful, but it operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Therefore, it's just a matter of finding the right time for you! On the whole, the equipment and facilities are clean, and it seems like the staff are quite proactive in maintaining the gym. I only used the restroom and locker rooms once, and it was a bit off-putting, so I haven't returned. I think it may have been due to the time of day, around 5:30-6, when things were a bit messy. One suggestion I could make is perhaps cleaning the ceiling in the weights area, as it seems a bit moldy.

I must say, there seems to be a persistent issue with the facilities, such as having just one restroom in the men's locker room. It's quite disappointing to see this level of neglect in the gym. Planet Fitness really needs to focus on improving all its facilities, regardless of the demographics of its members. It's essential to step up their game if they want to retain customers.

Splendid gym, I generally frequent the Catonsville establishment but found myself in the vicinity and shall indeed return! Megan was brilliant, she took the time to give me a tour of the gym and acquainted me with their trainer. It was splendid to feel at ease and be warmly welcomed at a fresh club. I wholeheartedly endorse this location!

After visiting Fitness Evolution, I must say that if you only have $10 a month to spare, you might want to consider other options.

For that price, you pretty much get what you pay for! While you'll have access to a workout space, you'll also encounter:

- Several malfunctioning machines that seem to stay broken for weeks without any maintenance.
- Weights strewn across the floor of the weight room, often neglected by both patrons and even the gym's own staff.
- Staff members more interested in their phones than assisting paying customers.
- The air conditioning has been out of order for months, which is particularly frustrating during the summer heat. With no alternative ventilation in place, it becomes quite uncomfortable to exercise in the 90-degree weather with high humidity.

If this is your only affordable fitness option, it might be worth considering home workouts like P90X or Insanity, or simply taking your exercise routine outdoors.

Update: December 2020
I happened to be in the vicinity and decided to visit this gym location. To my surprise, I found it quite pleasing. The water filter light was on, indicating fresh and cold water. They have an excellent sanitation station set up, the mirrors were spotless, and the staff was friendly, ensuring that everyone wore their masks properly covering their noses.

This gym is impeccably clean. Although I didn't use the shower facilities during this visit, I assume they are similar to my previous experiences.

Usually, I frequent the Greenbelt location, but I visit this one when I'm nearby to save on gas. One thing that slightly bothers me is that the water fountain here never shows the status of the filter light. This makes me question if the water is just plain tap water. Additionally, the hot water in the showers tends to run out quickly, unlike the Greenbelt location where you can enjoy a long, hot shower.

Moreover, it's worth noting that this gym is not open 24 hours. The staff here are decent. Overall, this gym is okay, and I will continue to visit when I'm in the area.
Angela Williams (5/5/25, 5:35 PM):
PF @East West Hwy Hyattsville, MD is a splendid fitness center. The employees are consistently welcoming and courteous. Regardless of the hour, a smile always awaits me upon arrival. The gym and equipment are kept immaculately clean, as are the locker room and restroom facilities. As I bid farewell, the staff never fails to acknowledge me with a friendly gesture. My anticipation for each workout session only grows!
Victoria King (5/3/25, 3:16 PM):
This establishment is quite lovely, however, the maintenance of the machines can be rather time-consuming. It often takes up to 6 months to repair a machine once it breaks down. Additionally, some patrons tend to leave the equipment quite soiled with their sweat after use. It would be beneficial if the staff were more attentive and diligent in cleaning up after customers.
Matthew Cruz (5/3/25, 3:17 AM):
I've never encountered any major problems with this gym. There's plenty of parking available, although some of the spaces are quite narrow. It's a bit of a shame that a few machines always seem to be out of order, but overall, it's a gym where I always feel at ease.
Susan Wilson (4/28/25, 2:08 PM):
This place is an absolute disgrace, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It seems like they clean it once a month, and the machines are in terrible condition. Overall, not a very welcoming environment.
Sara Ortiz (4/28/25, 6:56 AM):
This gym is absolutely dreadful. Oh my goodness. Besides the cardio machines, they only have one of each machine available. This means you're constantly waiting for others to finish before you can use the equipment you need. By the time it's your turn, you're already frustrated from waiting or have moved on to another exercise entirely. On top of that, they provide disinfectant wipes but limit you to using only two per session. The machines are frequently out of order, the staff members are unhelpful, and there's simply not enough space to comfortably work out. It's a litany of problems! Thankfully, the bright side is that it's transitioning to a Planet Fitness soon.
Jennifer Kim (4/27/25, 8:39 PM):
In the month of August 2023, approximately 30% of the gym's machines are not functioning properly. It is quite common to come across an "out of order" sign on these machines, but frustratingly, the signs tend to vanish after a week without the machines being fixed. Shockingly, these defective machines have been out of commission for well over a year now.

On a brighter note, the dumbbells stand out as the highlight of the gym. However, it is quite frustrating that they are frequently misplaced, perhaps due to a lack of attention to detail when it comes to organizing them. One can't help but question the diligence of the staff, as their presence is mainly observed during refilling of sanitizer bottles and engaging in light-hearted banter behind the front desk.
Jeffrey Thompson (4/25/25, 2:33 PM):
Ever since Tony Raspberry departed Fitness Evolution in March 2016, the gym has been under subpar management, leading to a decline in its overall quality. It appears that the same individuals who initially mismanaged the gym have taken over once again, resulting in broken machines and a lack of maintenance. Consequently, my visits to the gym have become sporadic, as I have opted to seek out alternative workout options across the street. Despite the efforts of the staff to uphold standards, it is evident that the unqualified management is hindering their progress. It is disheartening to witness the deterioration of this once-thriving gym. In my opinion, drastic measures need to be taken, including a potential closure, in order to address these issues effectively.
Frank Gonzales (4/25/25, 8:34 AM):
The quality of this gym is top-notch. It's the cleanest facility I've ever been to, hands down. You can rest assured that there won't be a COVID outbreak here – they've got everything under control. The equipment is all in fantastic shape, and there are more dumbbells than you could ever need. Even during peak hours, you'll always find the right weight. Plus, the dumbbells are always perfectly organized. The staff go above and beyond to take care of everything, so you can focus on your workout. The members are considerate and don't hog the weights. The bathrooms are so spotless, they feel like a fancy hotel room. In short, you'd be crazy not to join this gym.
Evelyn Lee (4/24/25, 9:25 AM):
This gym is always spotless and filled with enthusiastic folks. It can get pretty packed around 5 o'clock, but I'm usually able to snag the equipment or space I need. Other members are good about wiping down the machines and only occupying them if they're in use. During the summer, Planet Fitness offers complimentary access to high school students – I reckon it's a splendid idea to provide more opportunities for young people. However, the kids often move around in packs and sometimes commandeer a section with barbells to hang out. They're respectful and will move if you ask them to. Consequently, I tend to steer clear of the gym between 1 pm and 7 pm in the summertime. This doesn't deter me from working out, though; adjusting my schedule is simply a personal choice, not a necessity for using the gym. I would never want to see the free access for teenagers taken away.
Dylan Allen (4/23/25, 3:09 PM):
I am thrilled to have discovered this Planet Fitness gym! It's so close to my place and the doctor's office, which is super convenient. The team and General Manager Raymond were incredibly welcoming and friendly. They took the time to give my husband and me a tour. We're absolutely delighted with this gym. Top-notch customer service and support can truly make a difference. We wholeheartedly endorse this gym.
Samantha Anderson (4/22/25, 4:23 PM):
I've been frequenting this gym for months now, and I must say, I was really hoping they'd address the issue of the water filtration system. It's truly unsanitary and not conducive to a healthy environment. I strongly believe that Planet Fitness should make this a top priority! Additionally, the fact that there is only one functioning restroom stall for men, and it has been this way for months, is quite concerning. It's simply not feasible for just one stall to accommodate the hundreds of individuals coming in and out daily. It is imperative that this matter be resolved promptly. While I understand that there may be other equipment and maintenance needs, these two issues should definitely be tackled as soon as possible!
Jason Anderson (4/22/25, 11:11 AM):
I haven't been utilizing this gym for the last three months, but my membership fees were still being deducted. When I eventually made the decision to terminate my membership, they hit me with an extra $25 cancellation charge. It's completely absurd and unjust. Their tactics seem more geared towards extracting money from clients rather than delivering quality service. I strongly advise against signing up with this gym because of their unreasonable policies and deceptive cancellation regulations.
