The Local Gym in Acworth, Georgia: A Look at Accessibility and Member Experiences
The Local Gym, located in Acworth, Georgia, aims to provide a welcoming environment for all fitness enthusiasts. However, it's crucial to explore both the facilities and some recent member experiences to understand what this gym truly offers.
Accessibility Features
One of the key aspects of The Local Gym is its commitment to accessibility. The gym features a wheelchair-accessible car park and a wheelchair-accessible entrance that allows individuals with mobility challenges to enter and navigate the facility with ease. This focus on accessibility ensures that everyone can participate in their health and fitness journey.
Member Experiences and Customer Service Concerns
While the gym prides itself on being accessible, many members have voiced concerns about customer service. Numerous reviews highlight issues related to billing practices and staff responsiveness. For instance, several members expressed frustration about being charged annual renewal fees even after canceling their memberships. One individual noted, “I cancelled my membership and they took out the 100 dollar annual renewal anyways,” showcasing how communication issues may lead to dissatisfaction.
Other members echoed similar sentiments, mentioning that despite reaching out multiple times for refunds or account cancellations, they received little to no response. These experiences indicate a need for better planning and management from the ownership.
A Mixed Atmosphere
Despite the customer service concerns, many members appreciate the gym's atmosphere. Several reviews indicate that the gym has improved significantly under new management, with a cleaner environment and updated equipment. A member remarked, “The new owners have cleaned it up big time,” highlighting the positive changes that have taken place.
However, the gym's temperature control also comes into question, as multiple reviewers complained about the heat while working out. Recommendations to cool down the facility have been made to improve comfort during workouts.
Membership Considerations
When considering a membership at The Local Gym, potential members should be aware of various factors. The accessibility features are commendable; however, the recurring theme of billing issues and customer service shortcomings might deter some individuals from committing to a long-term membership.
While the gym provides great amenities and a supportive workout environment, it's essential to weigh these positives against the feedback regarding management practices.
In conclusion, The Local Gym in Acworth, Georgia, offers accessible facilities and a dedicated fitness community. However, potential members should proceed with caution and keep the reported customer service issues in mind when deciding if this gym aligns with their fitness goals.

Lovely gym, plenty of amenities. As the weather warms up, they still keep the heat at 70 degrees. It would be really helpful if the owner could perhaps lower the heat to 68 or even turn it off altogether. With the temperature rising to the 60s and 70s these days, it's tough to exercise in a gym with such warm and stuffy air, especially with 10 or more people working out all at once. Additionally, there are quite a few leaks in the ceiling that need fixing. It can be a bit distracting to have water dripping on your head while working out on a rainy day. Despite these small issues, I do appreciate this gym and the wonderful staff!

PAY THE INSTRUCTORS!
There ain't no room for injustice here. Exploiting folks during these uncertain times is downright despicable. Don't stand for it.
Don't back this or any establishment that exploits the hard work and goodwill of their staff.
PAY THE INSTRUCTORS!

This establishment has a bit of a culture issue, and it all stems from the top!!!!
Establishing a culture and environment can go a long way, and it all kicks off with the leadership and guidance of the owner/ownership. The Owner possesses a negative attitude, lacks positive interactions, and neglects to meet and greet their members. There appears to be a lack of appreciation and dedication to the members, the facility, and the gym as a whole. Either this chap is under an overwhelming amount of stress or needs to relax a tad and crack a smile.
Despite these shortcomings, I have noticed some positives in this gym since joining - new equipment, a clean environment, and updated TVs. 👍

We went there for a few weeks because we didn't have any other options in this area that offered a "kids zone." However, the place is quite dirty; it seemed like they never cleaned aside from taking out the trash. The workout equipment was scattered everywhere, creating a mess. I only returned because we needed to train, and Katie, the lady who looked after my kids, was really kind. But I always felt guilty for leaving my kids in such an unclean environment. Some of the customers were friendly, but overall, there wasn't much else.
This part of town could really benefit from a good gym with a kids' zone. If they improved their customer service, cleanliness, and upgraded a few machines, I'm sure they would retain and attract more customers.

My husband and I were transferred to this gym because the gym we had previously joined (1440) closed down. We received an email informing us of the change and were informed that we could cancel our membership if we didn't want to continue with this gym. Within a week of receiving the email, my husband reached out to them to request a cancellation. They did not ask us to complete any cancellation paperwork, but simply stated that our membership would be cancelled. This was in July, and we have been charged every month since then. We have been emailing them consistently, requesting refunds, asking them to stop charging us, and seeking confirmation that our account has indeed been cancelled. We even went as far as initiating a chargeback for the most recent month. Despite their assurances that our account is cancelled and that they would address the refund and payment stoppage with the billing company, the charges have persisted. We have lost a significant amount of money due to this gym. At this juncture, our only recourse seems to be attempting to block their charges through our bank.

You can go at any time. The staff is lovely. It's usually not too busy. I hardly ever have to wait for a machine.

I highly advise against utilizing this gym in any situation.
Michael Hughes (4/12/25, 6:55 AM):
I’m attempting to embrace this gym, but the proprietors insist on keeping the thermostat set in the 80s. If I desired to exercise in warm temperatures, I would do so outdoors or schedule a hot yoga session. Kindly lower the AC. Not only is it uncomfortable, but the bacteria are multiplying at an alarming rate. Much obliged.

They are having a spot of bother trying to sort out service between the two gyms, Hiram and Dallas. You ask for access to one, but they end up giving it to the wrong one. You ask for service, but the chaps at the Dallas office don't have the foggiest idea of how to contact the Hiram office. I once had an encounter where the staff on the blower were rather rude and short.
This gym had no issue giving me a scan card or sorting out payment deductions. I was feeling a bit miffed, but I kept my cool. This establishment tends to point the finger at the customer and doesn't really take responsibility for the service issues.

I’v been frequenting this place for years, and let me tell you, it’s recently been taken over by new management and the difference is absolutely astounding! The new owners have really spruced things up. The kids’ area has been given a fresh coat of paint and new carpeting, making it a space I would feel comfortable bringing my little ones to now. The restrooms and equipment are also much cleaner - you can really see that they take pride in their gym. One of the new owners, Jim, is quite the character. He has a way of making you feel like an old friend as soon as you step through the door. I’m eager to see what else they have in store for the future. I’m so pleased that these folks took charge of the gym.

I was on the lookout for a spot to get in a solid workout, and decided to pay a visit... the instant I was welcomed, I knew it was just the right place... I felt right at home, and it took me back to my powerlifting days!
Albert Sullivan (4/7/25, 9:27 PM):
The previous weeks 'ave been dreadfully hot whilst endeavorin' to do a workout in this gym. I even go in late at night, and they 'ave fans blowin', but it truly doesn't make much of a difference. On th' bright side, there be a lovely staff and a variety of gear, but it be almost unbearable to cope with such temperatures whilst tryin' to workout.
Megan Campbell (4/5/25, 10:12 PM):
When I was scoping out a new gym, this one happened to be very nearby my humble abode. I almost didn't commit, though, due to the owner's responses to criticisms from other patrons. Despite my reservations, I decided to take the plunge and join anyway. Lo and behold, my experience ended up aligning with those other folks. Don't count on the owner for top-notch customer service. He tends to resort to playing the victim card when faced with billing issues. His contract with the billing processor leaves no room for flexibility on his end. I remained a member for a good three to four years, dutifully paying my monthly dues, yet only gracing the gym with my presence a handful of times. When I finally decided to cancel, he flat out refused to waive the annual club fee that coincided with my last payment. When I inquired about the possibility of a refund for that fee, his retort was along the lines of "why would you deserve a refund, Tanya?" Blah, blah, blah. Utterly impolite. And mark my words, I am fully prepared for his inevitable response to this post, which will likely only serve to further solidify my stance. Just you wait. He'll point the finger at me.
And to preempt any attempted deflection, there was a single month where my debit card failed due to needing replacement. It wasn't until I received a collection notice (so swiftly) that I became aware of the issue. Out of all the merchants I dealt with, he was the sole individual who saw fit to slap me with a fee for the inconvenience, asserting that since he incurred a cost, I should bear it too. Eventually, he begrudgingly agreed to refund me, but the catch was I had to physically go to the gym to collect it in cash.
Other than those hiccups, it's a decent gym. I appreciate its cozy, secluded atmosphere. It's mainly populated by earnest fitness enthusiasts. As long as you steer clear of any billing kerfuffles, your time there will likely be fairly pleasant.
Update: Brian's decision to air our entire email exchange only serves to validate my viewpoint. Many thanks, Brian.

My daughter was attending this gym, and she shared with me all the happenings regarding the unfortunate treatment of the instructors by the owner when she tried to advocate for them. It's appalling to see this business scamming their staff and mistreating their clients in such a manner!! The owner absolutely needs to compensate the instructors fairly for their work!!!!
